Overview
The Veterinarian provides and performs various medica care to a variety of domestic or exotic animals to maintain and improve the health and well being of the animals.
Essential Functions
1 Provides clinical and preventive care for domestic or exotic animals; performs examinations, identifies diagnosis, and determines treatment.
2 Interacts, engages, and communicates with staff pertaining to issues associated with the health, feeding, husbandry, nutrition, breeding and diseases, and injuries to keep all parties informed of the status of animals.
3 Coordinates the administration of various aspects of animal care to effectively care for animals and control animal-related human health problems.
4 Consults and collaborates with medical, dental, veterinary professionals to facilitate specialty animal care services and state and county health agencies regarding public health issues.
5 Coordinates the planning of the daily activities of the veterinary function to ensure efficient and effective operation.
6 Orders, issues, and administers drugs and medical supplies in compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
7 Assists, supports, and helps manager in the development and implementation of policies which impact animal and, indirectly, human health.
8 Oversees the sale of shelter animals to research institutions for compliance with city ordinance and policy directives.
9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Thorough knowledge of the techniques and procedures required in the veterinary medical care of a variety of domestic or exotic animals.
2 Knowledge of husbandry, nutrition, disease, diagnostics, heart worm disease
and treatment, and pharmaceuticals.
3 Knowledge of Local, State, and Federal laws as applied to Shelter medicine.
4 Ability to diagnose and recognize illness, injury, and disease in animals.
5 Ability to handle and humanely manage various domestic or exotic animals in different health stages.
6 Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of health records and reports.
7 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
8 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
9 Ability to supervise the work of others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited college.
EQUIVALENCIES:
Candidates who are in the final semester of an AVMA accredited program and have a preliminary Veterinary license in good standing can be qualified contingent upon receipt of Degree. (Degree must be completed prior to date of hire.)
An active Veterinary license from the State of Texas will meet the education and Veterinary license requirements.
LICENSES and/or CERTIFICATIONS:
Must obtain Veterinary license in the State of Texas within the probationary period.
Must obtain a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration certificate (Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, 5) within the probationary period.
Must have a current valid driver's license and good driving record.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Spay/neuter skills.
Basic understanding of shelter medicine.
Effective oral/written communication skills.
Basic computer skills.
No Felony drug offenses
