Volunteer Live-in Caretaker (Unpaid)
Central Texas Pig Rescue
Job Description
Central Texas Pig Rescue is looking for our next live-in animal caretaker to support the needs of over 200 animal residents and our robust, passionate volunteer Animal Care Team. Our live-in caretaker is the backbone of the team. We’re looking for compassionate, pig-loving humans who want to have a big impact on the lives of rescued animals. While animal-care experience is a plus, all of us started with little to none—and everything can be taught to the right person. If you’re looking for an adventure, hard and fulfilling work, new pig friends, and an escape into the Enchanted Pig Forest of Central Texas, this role might be for you.
Some duties include:
- Morning chicken care
- Filling care shifts not covered by volunteers (around 4 per week, usually scheduled in advance)
- Being available on site, reachable by walkie-talkie or phone
- Sleeping on site each night, arranging coverage if you're away
- Being on-call for emergencies or special needs (e.g., icy roads, hospital runs)
- Administering medications or special meals to special-needs residents
Qualifications:
You might be the right person if you:
- Love animals and feel drawn to caretaking
- Can collaborate with a team while taking initiative and direction
- Have the time and desire to treat this as a period of service to the animals (if this is your clubbing era, this might not be the right time!)
- Can take on a leadership-adjacent role while supporting volunteers and senior staff
- Are comfortable outdoors and can handle Texas summers (and increasingly cold winters)
- Can lift 50 lbs and walk long distances on hilly or rugged terrain
- Are able-bodied and capable of physical labor
- Agree to a vegan lifestyle during your time with us
- Can use Microsoft Teams for communication, reporting, and coordination
Accommodations:
- Private on-site tiny home (“The Cottage”) with fenced yard (helpful if you have pets)
- Off-grid solar power, well or city water (requires active resource management—we’ll train you)
- Sleeping loft, storage loft, shower, fridge, cooktop, basic furnishings
- High-speed internet
- Washer on site
- A basic living stipend may be possible if needed
Notes:
This is an unpaid role. At this time, CTPR has zero paid positions, though we hope to fund this role in the future. Still, this opportunity has always appealed to people at the right moment in their lives—those seeking connection, purpose, adventure, and a deep bond with animals. The impact on your heart and character will stay with you forever.
We ask for a 6–18 month commitment. Couples encouraged to apply. CTPR welcomes all kind, compassionate humans—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, religion, age, or origin.
