Patricia Smith

Founder, Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project
Patricia Smith is the founder of the Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project©. As a certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist, she has been writing, speaking and facilitating workshops on the subject nationally and internationally for the past 20 years. She first learned about compassion fatigue as training and development manager for Humane Society Silicon Valley. She went on to train for American Humane for several years. As a consultant for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York City, she assisted in creating and rolling out a nationwide compassion fatigue program for their 800-plus employees Fatigue in Caregiving. She has authored a number of books and training materials on the subject. Her latest book entitled Stress, Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Handling in Veterinary Practice, published by Grupo Asis, an international publisher specializing in veterinary medicine books and materials, is now available. Additionally, she has been named a Whiteley Scholar, which provides a writing/study grant funded through the Helen R. Whiteley Foundation at the University of Washington in Seattle. In September 2016, Patricia presented a TEDx talk entitled: Navigating the Path to Wellness: Compassion Fatigue in Caregiving.
