Senior Specialist, Shelter Outreach and Policy Engagement, the Humane Society of the United States

Samantha Nelson works to strengthen nationwide partnerships with shelters and rescues, resulting in the placement of thousands of animals who were victims of animal cruelty, disasters and overcrowding. Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from the University of Pittsburgh and is a graduate of the Victoria Stilwell Academy for dog training and behavior. She previously worked as a public policy specialist, advancing efforts to prevent pet homelessness and strengthen communities through state and local legislation. In her spare time, she dabbles in dog sports, including dock diving and agility, volunteers as a dog training assistant and has fostered over 100 dogs and cats. Nelson lives in Annapolis, Maryland, with two wonderful dogs, Charlie and Liam.
