Senior Specialist, Shelter Outreach & Policy Engagement, The Humane Society of the United States

As Senior Specialist of Shelter Outreach and Policy Engagement, Samantha Nelson has worked to strengthen nationwide partnerships with shelters and rescues resulting in the placement of thousands of animals that were victims of animal cruelty, natural disasters and overcrowding. Through mentorship and training, policy initiatives, and grants, the shelter outreach team aims to support and lift up animal welfare organizations to serve pets and the people who love them.

Sam holds a B.A. in economics and political science from the University of Pittsburgh and is also a graduate of the Victoria Stilwell Academy for Dog Training and Behavior. She previously worked as the Companion Animals Public Policy Specialist on efforts to prevent pet homelessness and strengthen communities through state and local legislation across the country. In her spare time, she dabbles in dog sports including dock diving and agility, volunteers as a training assistant at a local dog training facility, and has fostered over 100 dogs and cats. Sam shares her home with two wonderful dogs, Charlie and Liam.
