POSITION: Animal Admissions and Transfer Coordinator
CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Benefits Eligible
SUPERVISOR: Operations Director
SCHEDULE: Regular schedule is 9:30AM-6:00PM on Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend hours required for special events.
STARTING RANGE: $16-18/hour depending on experience
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Admissions & Transfer Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for animals entering the Roanoke Valley SPCA and the people seeking assistance for them. They are the front-line professional responsible for managing the admission of owner-surrendered pets and shelter transferred pets into our shelter. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate animal records, reviewing veterinary and behavioral histories, conducting behavioral evaluations, processing intake paperwork, entering data into shelter software, and communicating critical information to medical, behavior, adoption, and animal care teams.
This position also supports adoption operations one day per week and during special events by facilitating animal-to-human and dog-to-dog meet-and-greets, providing adoption counseling, and completing adoption paperwork to help create successful matches between pets and their new families.
The ideal candidate understands that animal welfare is about both animals and people and approaches every interaction with professionalism, empathy, sound judgment, and a commitment to lifesaving outcomes. They combine animal welfare experience with compassion and are comfortable assisting individuals facing difficult circumstances while remaining calm, supportive, and effective in emotionally challenging situations.
EDUCATIONAL & LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
* College degree or equivalent experience in animal science, nonprofit management, animal behavior, or similar field.
* Valid driver’s license and ability to safely drive an animal transport van.
REQUIRED PRIOR EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
* Experience working in animal welfare/sheltering, veterinary medicine, animal control, or behavior consulting.
* Strong knowledge of canine and feline behavior, body language, stress signals, and safe handling techniques.
* Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with computers.
* Working knowledge of common veterinary terminology and the ability to understand and accurately interpret medical records, treatment plans, and veterinary recommendations.
* Ability to confidently and safely handle animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions.
* Ability to communicate with empathy and compassion while maintaining professional boundaries and organizational policies.
* Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills with the ability to navigate difficult conversations respectfully and professionally.
* Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
* Ability to lift and move animals and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
