Job Description
**animal behavior manager**
the animal behavior manager oversees behavior, training, and enrichment programs that support the physical and emotional well-being of animals in pet helpers' care. this role promotes positive outcomes through behavior modification, enrichment, adoption support, and surrender prevention while ensuring staff and volunteers use safe, humane, and effective handling practices.
working closely with shelter leadership, this position evaluates behavioral health, develops individualized behavior plans, supports placement decisions, and advances standards including the five freedoms and fear free handling practices. through leadership and coaching, the animal behavior manager helps improve animal welfare, reduce length of stay, and increase successful outcomes.
**essential duties & responsibilities**
* lead and improve shelter behavior, training, and enrichment programs.
* develop individualized behavior modification and enrichment plans.
* conduct behavior assessments and make recommendations for adoption, foster, transfer, or other placement options.
* train staff, volunteers, adopters, and the public on positive reinforcement, animal behavior, and safe handling techniques.
* participate in daily animal rounds and behavior case management.
* maintain accurate records and program metrics.
* develop and update policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols.
* support staff and volunteer development through training and coaching.
* promote low-stress handling and consistent behavior messaging across departments.
* assist with conflict resolution and other duties as assigned.
**working conditions**
* work is performed in office, shelter, and medical environments.
* requires multitasking and adaptability in a fast-paced setting.
* regular exposure to animals, including risks such as bites and scratches.
* moderate noise levels are common.
**minimum qualifications**
* cpdt certification and/or a bachelor's degree in animal behavior or a related field preferred.
* at least 3 years of animal shelter behavior experience.
* strong knowledge of behavior modification, learning theory, positive reinforcement, and enrichment practices.
* experience working with animals displaying behavioral challenges.
* knowledge of shelter operations, population management, and animal welfare best practices.
* excellent leadership, communication, and team development skills.
* proficiency with shelter management software and related technology.
* commitment to ongoing professional development.
