Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Animal Care & Adoptions Manager, the Assistant Manager of Animal Care & Adoptions is a hands-on leader and a daily presence in Crossroads' dog kennel and cat care areas. This role is equal parts animal care practitioner and coach/mentor, spending time each day working directly alongside our job-training program participants in both the dog kennel and cat adoption areas, modeling best practices, and ensuring the highest standard of care for every animal in our program. The goals are to make sure that animals are receiving high quality care and that young adults in our job training program are providing quality care for our animals, learning and growing, and being held to clear expectations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Mentoring
Work directly alongside job-training program participants in the kennel and cat adoption areas, modeling safe, humane, and compassionate animal handling and care techniques
Provide consistent on-the-job coaching and real-time feedback to program participants as they develop animal care competencies
Work with the Animal Care & Adoptions Manager to implement the animal care component of Crossroads' Competency-Based Job Skills Tracking Program; document participant progress and proactively support skill development
Collaborate with the Programs Team to apply a strengths-based approach to coaching and supervising each individual involved in animal care activities
Ensure daily training on and adherence to Crossroads’ animal care protocols 

Kennel & Cat Space Operations / Animal Care
Serve as the primary day-to-day operational lead for the dog kennel and cat adoption areas, ensuring all animals receive consistent, high-quality care including feeding, cleaning, exercise, socialization, enrichment, and medical monitoring
Maintain clean, safe, and well-organized kennel and cat adoption environments that meet animal welfare standards and support a positive experience for staff, interns, and visitors
Conduct or coordinate daily health checks and flag medical concerns to the Manager of Animal Care & Adoptions; assist with scheduling and facilitating veterinary care
Assist Manager with animal intake and adoptions including 
Partnering with local shelters to source adoptable cats and dogs for the Crossroads rescue program
Temperament assessments of potential rescue animals to ensure a safe and appropriate fit for the program
Responding to inquiries, reviewing applications, conducting adoption counseling, and facilitating ownership transfer
Oversee the daily care of all dogs and cats in the program, including hands-on time in both the kennel and cat adoption space, to ensure each animal's individual behavioral and physical needs are consistently met
Monitor inventory of feeding, cleaning, medical, and general care supplies; communicate replenishment needs to the Manager of Animal Care & Adoptions
Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and coordinating foster families in support of program goals
Connect community members seeking help with found, lost, or surrendered animals to appropriate resources
Assist with marketing content for social media and other marketing efforts for our adoptable pets
Identify animal-related volunteer needs; assist with training of volunteers to support animal care and enrichment activities

Data & Record Keeping
Assist with the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date intake, medical, foster, and outcome records for the Crossroads Adoption Program across all relevant databases as directed
Support the review and updating of Animal Care and Adoption & Foster Program policies and procedures as directed
Assist with post adoption follow-ups and ongoing support for adopters as directed
Assist with the timely and accurate data entry in the Shelter Animals Count national database as directed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
An ability to connect animals and people in meaningful ways
Love and understanding of both cats and dogs
Fluent understanding of canine and feline communication/body language
Two years or more of professional experience in an animal care role
One year or more of supervisory experience
Program development skills preferred
Animal training skills/behavioral management skills preferred
Teaching/coaching/mentoring experience preferred
General knowledge in the areas of animal welfare and youth development 
Working knowledge of Google Suite, including Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Forms
Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 40 lbs.
An ability to connect animals and people in meaningful ways

COMPENSATION
The hourly wage range is $22-$27 depending on experience.
