POSITION DESCRIPTION

Canine Behavior Specialist
Department: Behavior 
Reports to: Director of Operations
Type: Full-time Hourly- $21-26/hr 
Shift: Open but on a set schedule, with weekend day required.

Summary: 
The Behavior Specialist plays a critical role in supporting dogs who are not yet ready for the adoption floor by developing and implementing behavior support plans, while also serving as a key resource for Animal Care staff.

This position focuses on:
- Identifying and addressing emerging behavioral concerns in shelter dogs
- Creating clear, realistic handling and training protocols
- Coaching and supporting Animal Care staff in real-time to build confidence and safety when working with challenging dogs

This role is highly collaborative and staff-facing. The ideal candidate is not only skilled in canine behavior, but also excels at teaching, mentoring, and supporting a diverse team, including newer and early-career employees.

Responsibilities: 
Canine Behavior & Welfare

- Identify dogs in need of behavioral support, particularly those not yet eligible for the adoption floor
- Develop and implement individualized, goal-oriented behavior and handling plans
- Participate in behavior evaluations as needed to assess readiness for adoption
- Monitor progress and adjust plans based on observed behavior and staff feedback

Staff Training & Support 

- Work alongside Animal Care staff during daily routines to provide hands-on coaching and support
- Translate behavior plans into clear, practical handling protocols staff can realistically follow
- Lead regular training and behavioral modification sessions (group and 1:1)
- Serve as a supportive, approachable resource for staff
- Foster a culture where staff feel heard and supported

Collaboration & Communication

- Partner with Animal Care leadership and Behavior Manager
- Assist Adoption staff in communicating behavioral needs
- Maintain clear and detailed behavior records

Qualifications

Required

- Experience working with dogs of varying temperaments
- Strong understanding of canine behavior
- Ability to teach and coach staff effectively
- Calm and solution-focused demeanor
- Commitment to positive reinforcement training

Preferred
- Certification or working toward certification (CPDT-KA, IAABC, etc.)
- Shelter experience
- Experience mentoring staff

Working Conditions: 

Work is performed within various areas of facility including, but not limited to, the adoption center, the canine digs, the canine community park and the surrounding outside areas. All personnel must wear full length pants and non-slip footwear to maintain safety on various surfaces throughout the facility and surrounding areas.
