Job Description
Cat Town is looking for an experienced animal-welfare professional with great cat-handling skills to assist with a wide variety of cat-care and coordination tasks. This is a part-time (24 hours per week), non-exempt (hourly) position located in Oakland, CA. Some weekend and occasional holiday work is required. Starting pay is $24-$27 per hour, depending on experience. Cat Town benefits include paid time off, and a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with matching contributions of up to 3%.

About the position
The Cat Care Coordinator is an integral part of Cat Town’s program staff, coordinating and assisting with medical care, administering medications, transporting cats and supplies, and handling challenging cats for minor procedures such as giving subcutaneous injections and grooming. The Cat Care Coordinator may also support a range of other tasks including adoption counseling, and customer service.
The right person is reliable and able to work effectively with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment. Due to the nature of the position, a strong candidate will be skilled at adapting their priorities to accommodate new information about cats in our care and cats awaiting support at other organizations.
Under general direction from the Program Director, the Cat Care Coordinator will:
- Coordinate medical care for cats with external veterinary partners;
- Provide medical treatment to cats as directed, such as vaccinations, flea control, and oral medications as prescribed; coordinate emergency care as needed;
- Expedite the movement of cats to and from the Adoption Center and remote adoption locations;
- Support foster volunteers by answering questions, and providing coaching, resources, or hands-on help with medical and behavior care;
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date database records to ensure proper documentation of all animal intake, outcomes, and medical and behavior care;
- Assist in determining when to make cats available for adoption;
- Assist the public by responding to email and telephone inquiries about fostering or adopting from Cat Town, and answer questions about cat rescue in the Bay Area, and other subjects;
- Transport cats and supplies to and from the shelter, foster homes, vet appointments, and the Cat Town Adoption Center;
- Communicate with staff, volunteers, and the public about the cats in our programs;
- Assist with assessing cats at local/regional shelters for transfer to Cat Town; and
Other related duties as assigned.
Required Attributes, Skills and Experience:
- At least 2 years experience working with cats and kittens in a shelter, rescue, or veterinary practice environment (volunteer experience is acceptable);
- Associate’s Degree, or at least 2 years experience working in an administrative or professional capacity;
- Proven skill at handling cats that may be shy, fearful, or fractious, using fear-free and other humane techniques;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and interact with a wide range of personalities and work styles, both individually and within groups of diverse constituents;
- Ability to work effectively, both in making independent judgment calls and in collaborating with a small team, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures. Ability to be flexible with changing information, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize;
- Ability to think creatively and be resourceful using a limited budget;
- Self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to manage and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
- Proficient in Google Suite (preferred) and/or Microsoft Office applications, Slack, Salesforce experience a plus;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to regularly work flexible hours, including weekends and the occasional late evening;
- Ability to lift and carry cats, litter, and other supplies up to 30 pounds;
- Valid Driver's License with access to reliable transportation.
We’re hoping you bring one or more of these bonus skills or experiences to the job:
- Experience in customer service;
- Basic knowledge of common cat illnesses and medical needs, such as administering medications, vaccinations, and parasite control.
- Basic knowledge of cat behavior and animal behavior fundamentals; related training, education or certification is helpful!
- Experience conducting Trap-Neuter-Return projects; and
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
