Job Description

Hugs For Harry is seeking a compassionate and experienced Rescue Operations Professional to oversee daily operations at our dog rescue in Lafayette, CA.

We specialize in rescuing senior and vulnerable dogs who need patience, structure, and thoughtful care while waiting for their forever homes.

This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for the full day-to-day operation of the rescue — including supervising staff, overseeing dog care and enrichment, and guiding each dog through their journey with us, whether that leads to adoption or a lifetime of care within our sanctuary.

Some of our dogs will remain with us for the rest of their lives. These are often seniors or deeply bonded dogs who have found safety and belonging here. For them, Hugs For Harry is not a transition — it is home.

This role requires someone who understands that rescue is not always about placement, but about commitment, stability, and honoring the emotional lives of the dogs in our care.

This role also carries complete ownership of the facility environment. You will shape how this rescue runs.

We are looking for someone who holds a high standard — someone who ensures the space is consistently clean, organized, calm, and welcoming. This is not a role where tasks are delegated and left unchecked. The right person notices what needs attention and takes action immediately.

If a kennel needs refreshing, it’s handled.
If something is out of place, it’s corrected.
If a standard is slipping, it’s reset.

You lead from the front and set the tone for the entire team.

Ideal candidates have experience in animal shelters, rescue organizations, veterinary clinics, or dog training environments, along with a strong understanding of canine behavior and low-stress handling.

We are specifically looking for someone who is:

• proactive and self-directed
• highly accountable
• calm under pressure
• deeply attentive to both dogs and environment

This role is best suited for someone who takes pride in doing things properly — and understands that a well-run, peaceful environment is essential to the wellbeing of the dogs in our care.

If you’ve ever been the person who sat with the shy dog no one else noticed — we’d love to hear from you.

Compensation

This role is structured at approximately 35 hours per week at $25/hour to start.

We recognize this is an initial range, and we are committed to increasing compensation as the organization grows and funding expands. This role is intended to develop into a full-time, higher-compensated leadership position.

This position is best suited for someone who is motivated not only by compensation, but by the opportunity to take ownership of a meaningful rescue program and grow with it over time.
