Job Description
HSSC is searching for a Director of Veterinary Medicine to provide on-site medical care and spay/neuter services to our shelter animals and is comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must be comfortable with pediatric spay/neuter, in heat spays, pregnant spays, feral cat spay/neuter, large dog surgeries, as well as other medical procedures. Additionally, HSSC occasionally houses small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds so some experience with small animals is preferred.
Responsibilities include: examining and treating a variety of illnesses and injuries; performing spay/neuter surgeries (HQHVSN experience a plus); diagnostic testing; communicating medical plans and ensuring follow up care for shelter animals; adhering to contagious disease protocols; performing occasional euthanasia; keeping thorough medical records; providing input on and updating medical protocols; managing a staff of four (including one part-time veterinarian) and stay within budgetary guidelines by by using effective and efficient medical judgement.
Candidates must adhere to and maintain the established standards in accordance with shelter and state policy, and help our animals stay as comfortable as possible while in our care, in accordance with the duties or limitations set by the Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board.
Candidates must possess a DVM degree and be licensed (or have the ability to obtain a license) to practice in the State of Wisconsin. Candidates must possess (or have the ability to obtain) DEA licensure for controlled substances. Candidates must be a team player with extraordinary communication and problem-solving skills and have a passion for both animals and people. Previous shelter medicine and HQHVSN surgery experience preferred.
