As the Patient Care & Foster Care Manager, you will lead the teams responsible for some of our most vulnerable animals-those requiring medical attention and those awaiting placement in foster homes. Your ability to coach staff, think critically, and make informed, humane decisions directly impacts animal outcomes and team success.
What You'll Do
Lead & Develop People
Supervise, coach, and mentor patient care and foster care staff, creating a supportive and accountable team environment
Provide ongoing feedback, performance evaluations, and meaningful development opportunities
Coordinate training, including hands-on skill building and continuing education
Foster a culture where staff feel empowered to ask questions, think critically, and grow professionally
Drive Thoughtful, High-Quality Care
Oversee daily operations of medical and foster programs, ensuring efficient, compliant, and compassionate care
Partner with veterinarians to develop and implement treatment plans for ill and injured animals
Monitor population levels and evaluate capacity for care, making informed recommendations on placement and outcomes
Ensure all medical protocols, documentation, and kennel standards meet regulatory requirements
Use Critical Thinking to Solve Complex Challenges
Assess evolving medical and population needs and adapt plans in real time
Navigate nuanced decisions related to animal care, foster placement, and resource allocation
Collaborate across departments to troubleshoot issues, improve processes, and implement solutions
Respond to escalated concerns from staff, volunteers, and the public with professionalism and sound judgment
Support Foster Program Success
Oversee foster operations, ensuring timely placement and positive experiences for foster families
Collaborate with internal teams to recruit and retain fosters
Monitor length of stay and proactively identify barriers to placement
Ensure Operational Excellence
Manage medical inventory, supplies, and vendor relationships
Oversee scheduling to maintain coverage 7 days a week
Partner with leadership on budgeting and resource optimization
Maintain compliance with all safety standards and controlled substance protocols
What You Bring
A passion for developing people and building strong, resilient teams
Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, especially in fast-paced or ambiguous situations
At least 2 years of experience in veterinary medicine, animal sheltering, or a related field
Prior supervisory experience with a focus on coaching and accountability
Ability to balance compassion with sound judgment in emotionally complex situations
Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a biological science or Associate's in Veterinary Technology
Veterinary Technician license (preferred)
Experience treating or managing care for sick or critically ill animals
Work Environment & Schedule
Active, hands-on role requiring time on your feet and working directly with animals
Exposure to animal allergens and a variety of shelter conditions
Schedule will be 5 eight-hour shifts and will include at least one regular weekend shift
Position is fully on-site
