Job Description
Relief Veterinarian/Surgeon (Sick Pet Visits and Specialty Surgeries)Contractual Position
Pay rate: $1,000.00 per day (8-9 hour/shift, flexible schedule)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Medical and Surgical Support
• Evaluate and treat sick or injured animals presented to the Wellness Clinic when appropriate.
• Review laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, and other medical information and incorporate findings into treatment plans.
• Provide follow-up care and recheck examinations for surgical and medical patients.
• Determine when referral to an outside veterinary specialist or emergency hospital is warranted.
• Participate in euthanasia services when medically appropriate and in accordance with Pawmetto Lifeline policies.
Special Surgical Procedures
• Perform additional surgical procedures within the veterinarian's demonstrated training, experience, and comfort level, including but not limited to:
o Eye enucleations
o Mass and tumor removals
o Dental cleanings and dental extractions
o Amputations
o Hernia repairs
o Pyometra surgeries
o C-sections
o Foreign body removal
o Wound repair and reconstruction
o Cherry eye and other ophthalmic procedures, as appropriate
o Other soft-tissue surgical procedures as determined medically appropriate
• Evaluate patients to determine whether advanced procedures can be safely and appropriately performed within the Wellness Clinic or require referral to a specialty or emergency facility.
• Work collaboratively with the medical team to establish appropriate surgical and post-operative treatment plans.
Wellness and Preventative Medicine
• Provide routine wellness examinations and preventative veterinary services.
• Administer vaccinations and recommend appropriate parasite prevention, diagnostic testing, and preventative care.
• Perform health screenings, including appropriate laboratory testing and diagnostics.
• Counsel clients regarding preventative healthcare and treatment options designed to improve the long-term health and quality of life of their pets.
Team Collaboration
• Work closely with veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, clinic staff, and other Pawmetto Lifeline departments to provide efficient, high-quality patient care.
• Provide medical direction and guidance to veterinary support staff within the scope of veterinary practice.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with clients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, prognosis, and follow-up care.
• Support a positive, collaborative, and compassionate work environment.
Compliance and Professional Standards
• Maintain an active South Carolina veterinary license in good standing.
• Maintain required DEA registration and other applicable credentials.
• Follow all applicable federal, state, and local laws and veterinary practice regulations.
• Follow Pawmetto Lifeline's medical protocols, safety procedures, controlled-substance policies, and infection-control standards.
• Maintain accurate controlled-substance records and ensure medications are handled and documented appropriately.
• Remain current on veterinary medical and surgical practices through continuing education and professional development.
Other Duties
• Assist with special surgical cases and other medical needs as determined by the Medical Director or Clinic leadership.
• Assist with emergency or urgent medical cases when appropriate and within the capabilities of the clinic.
• Perform other veterinary duties as assigned based on the needs of the Wellness Clinic and Pawmetto Lifeline.
