Job Description
Second Chance Animal Rescue is a 30+ year nonprofit organization dedicated to animal welfare and rescue. In Fall 2026, we will open a brand-new shelter facility, creating an exciting opportunity for a compassionate and experienced leader to help launch and oversee operations in this new chapter. The Shelter Director is responsible for the overall management and daily operations of the animal shelter, ensuring high standards of animal care, staff leadership, facility maintenance, and community engagement. This role oversees shelter staff, volunteers, and programs while maintaining compliance with USDA, state, and local regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee daily shelter operations, including animal intake, housing, feeding, cleaning, enrichment, medical coordination, and adoption processes.
Ensure the health, safety, and humane treatment of all animals in accordance with organizational policies and legal requirements.
Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate shelter staff; create schedules and manage team performance.
Recruit, train, schedule, and oversee individual and group volunteers.
Maintain accurate records for animal intake, medical care, adoptions, fosters, and incident reports.
Coordinate veterinary care, vaccinations, medications, and emergency medical treatment.
Manage inventory and ordering of food, cleaning supplies, medications, and shelter equipment.
Oversee facility cleanliness, maintenance, and repairs to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
Develop and implement operational procedures and protocols for efficiency and compliance.
Work collaboratively with rescue partners, fosters, adopters, and the public to promote adoptions and positive community relations.
Assist with fundraising events, grant opportunities, outreach programs, and public education initiatives.
Monitor and manage the shelter budget and approve operational expenses.
Ensure compliance with USDA, state, and local regulations, inspections, and reporting requirements.
Respond professionally to emergencies, animal welfare concerns, and customer service issues.
Qualifications:
Experience in animal sheltering, animal welfare, veterinary care, or related field preferred.
Prior leadership or management experience required.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Experience handling animals safely and compassionately.
Proficiency with computers, recordkeeping systems, and basic budgeting.
Ability to lift 50+ pounds, stand for long periods, and work in indoor/outdoor environments.
Flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
