Shelter Manager - Adoption Services

About the Role

The Shelter Manager is a senior leadership position overseeing daily shelter operations, animal welfare standards, and team performance across adoption services, animal care, and foster coordination. All activities are guided by Fear Free® principles and shelter best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Care & Operations

- Maintain safety, cleanliness, enrichment, and welfare for all animals using Fear Free® practices
- Oversee intake, vaccinations, medications, medical/behavioral recordkeeping, and SOPs
- Coordinate surgery schedules, veterinary appointments, and animal transport
- Manage medical/shelter supply inventory and ensure controlled substance compliance

Leadership & Staff Development

- Directly supervise up to 10 animal care, adoption, and foster staff
- Lead all staffing functions: recruiting, onboarding, scheduling, coaching, evaluations, and performance management
- Foster a positive, inclusive, collaborative team culture
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator on volunteer integration and training

Administration & Programs

- Manage Petpoint® database; track and report KPIs (intakes, adoptions, length of stay)
- Generate monthly adoption and budget reports for the CEO and Board
- Participate in annual budget development; monitor monthly variances with the Finance Manager
- Facilitate adoptions, animal flow, and community/municipal partner relationships
- Represent AAHS at public events, donor tours, and PR activities
- Approve bi-weekly timesheets and submit credit card reconciliation reports

Qualifications

- Associate's degree required; bachelor's preferred
- Minimum 3 years animal sheltering or veterinary experience; behavioral knowledge a plus
- 3+ years supervisory/team leadership experience preferred
- Proficiency in Petpoint® a plus — training provided
- Excellent animal handling skills (dogs, cats, companion animals)
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and communication skills
- Valid driver's license; ability to operate cargo van/box truck
- Flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays
