Job Description
Lead the care that gives animals a second chance.We’re looking for a Medical Clinic Manager to help ensure every animal receives the medical attention they need. This is a hands-on role for someone who combines strong clinical skills with thoughtful leadership—someone who notices when an animal isn’t doing well, keeps treatments and records on track, communicates effectively with our veterinary support, and helps our team deliver quality care.
Working closely with the Shelter Manager, veterinary providers, and department leads, you’ll help animals move safely from intake through treatment and toward adoption or transport to rescue.
What you’ll lead:
• Reliable daily medical care. Coordinate clinic operations and administer medications, vaccinations, parasite preventatives, and prescribed treatments accurately and on schedule, following veterinary direction and established protocols.
• A prepared, supported clinic team. Train and guide clinic staff, establish clear daily priorities, and ensure standard operating procedures are consistently followed.
• Coordinated care throughout each animal’s stay. Organize intake medical exams, spay/neuter scheduling, transport health checks, and medical clearances.
• Early recognition of medical concerns. Watch for signs of illness, injury, distress, or declining welfare. Document observations accurately and promptly communicate concerns to the Shelter Manager and veterinary providers as appropriate.
• Disease prevention and containment. Maintain rigorous cleaning, disinfection, and isolation practices to protect animals and staff.
• Accurate records and accountable handling of medications. Keep medical records and inventory tracking current. Handle, administer, report, and log controlled substances under veterinary direction and in accordance with VRHS protocols and applicable DEA requirements.
• Safe, compassionate handling. Use and reinforce low-stress handling techniques that protect animal welfare and staff safety.
What you’ll bring:
You’re comfortable balancing individual animals’ needs with the demands of a busy shelter environment. You’ll bring careful attention to detail, calm judgment, and the ability to help others do their best work.
Required qualifications:
• At least three years of experience as a veterinary assistant or in a similar role in an animal shelter or small-animal clinical setting, with demonstrated staff leadership ability.
• The ability to recognize changes in animal behavior and welfare and safely handle cats and dogs of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions, including animals requiring infectious disease precautions.
• Proficiency in medical calculations, including weights and medication dosages, and the ability to follow and reinforce clinical protocols.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to medical documentation and inventory tracking.
• Current rabies certification, (CRV) maintained throughout employment, or the ability to successfully complete certification upon hire.
• Clear, respectful communication and the ability to stay composed as priorities change in a busy shelter.
• The ability to safely perform physical duties that include standing, bending, or lifting up to 40lbs.
Preferred: Veterinary technician certification or experience.
Position details
Compensation: $40,000-$45,000 annual salary
