Job Description
The Veterinary Team Supervisor is a working supervisor responsible for overseeing the daily medical care and treatment of animals at the SPCA of Wake County’s Resource Center. This role ensures that all medical services are delivered with professionalism, efficiency, and compassion while prioritizing animal welfare and quality of life.
Operating within the framework of shelter medicine best practices and the Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters established by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, this position plays a key role in population health management, disease prevention, and operational excellence.
As one of two Medical Team Supervisors, this role partners closely with the Medical Director and staff veterinarians to ensure consistent protocols, strong team performance, and high-quality patient care. The position provides direct supervision, coaching, and development for medical support staff while coordinating care across intake, treatment, surgery, foster, and adoption programs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Medical Operations & Patient Care
Oversee and coordinate daily medical operations, ensuring timely, humane, and efficient care for all animals in SPCA custody
Support veterinarians in delivering medical care, diagnostics, treatments, and surgical services
Ensure consistent implementation of shelter medicine protocols, including vaccination at intake, disease prevention, and triage procedures
Maintain high standards of biosecurity, sanitation, and infection control
Assist with high-volume spay/neuter operations and support efficient surgical workflows
Perform and train staff on diagnostic and laboratory procedures, including:
Blood draws
Fecal exams
Heartworm testing
FeLV/FIV testing
Basic laboratory procedures
Population Health & Shelter Medicine
Support population-level health strategies focused on prevention, early intervention, and treatment
Monitor animals for signs of infectious disease and partner with veterinarians on response protocols
Reinforce and implement protocols related to:
Vaccination and parasite control
Intake triage and isolation
Quarantine and disease containment
Stress reduction and humane handling
Ensure accurate and timely medical recordkeeping to support population health tracking and outcomes
Leadership & Team Development
Directly supervise veterinary assistants, technicians, and medical support staff
Provide coaching, mentorship, and daily leadership to drive performance and engagement
Conduct regular check-ins, performance feedback, and support employee development
Lead onboarding and training for new hires and volunteers within the medical team
Foster a collaborative, accountable, and mission-driven team culture
Operational Oversight
Serve as one of two Medical Team Supervisors to ensure consistent leadership coverage
Assist in managing schedules, staffing coverage, and coordination with veterinary staff
Identify workflow inefficiencies and implement process improvements
Maintain inventory of medical supplies, vaccines, and equipment
Ensure treatment areas remain organized, sanitized, and compliant with best practices
Collaboration & Communication
Partner closely with the Medical Director and veterinarians to implement and maintain care standards
Collaborate with animal care, foster, and adoption teams to support positive animal outcomes
Serve as a liaison between medical staff, veterinarians, volunteers, and cross-functional teams
Participate in meetings and provide updates on medical operations and team performance
Offsite Program Support
Support coordination and medical oversight for offsite programs as needed
Provide limited on-call support for urgent medical or operational needs
Qualifications Required Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience in animal welfare (medical capacity) OR 4 years in a veterinary hospital setting as a veterinary assistant or technician
At least 1 year of supervisory or leadership experience
Strong knowledge of veterinary medical procedures and animal handling techniques
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and SPCA of Wake County’s mission
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds
Frequent handling of animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions
Exposure to zoonotic diseases, cleaning chemicals, and medical materials
Ability to work in a high-volume, physically active environment
