Job Description

The Volunteer Manager oversees the recruitment and retention of volunteers to support all areas of operations for Maricopa County’s Animal Care and Control Department from intaking dogs to finding them new homes. We will look to you to drive positive changes by leading volunteers, removing barriers, and ensuring best practices are in place. You will collaborate with teams across all shelters to ensure consistency and to achieve the most optimal outcome for each animal with the available resources. This position requires the employee in office and/ or customer facing all hours worked.

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control employees are committed to animal welfare and strengthening the human-animal bond in our community. We Require
Three years of management or supervisor experience in an animal welfare or animal control organization
Bachelor’s degree
An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
Other Requirements
Volunteer Management experience within an animal welfare organization.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire a valid Arizona Driver’s License

Certifications in animal welfare or animal control
Extensive project management or logistics experience
Job Contributions
Responsible for developing and refining the volunteer program for Animal Care & Control
Recommends improvements and initiatives to the Department Deputy and Director and lead the implementation process
Meets with division managers to determine volunteer needs, coordinate assignments, and address problems
Develops and administers a volunteer recognition program
Provides the Director with timely, accurate operational reports and demonstrates exceptional organizational skills
Assists as needed with off-site events related to either the recruitment of volunteers or the use of volunteers in large numbers
Visits off-site locations to recruit volunteers and work to develop corporate volunteer opportunities
Updates the volunteer database and generates reports detailing volunteer activities
Assists animal welfare organizations with training and represents the Department at community functions and special events, including special projects as assigned
Working Conditions
Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
Position is in a busy, often noisy, office setting within an animal shelter with close proximity to animals of all types
Exposure to cleaning products used in animal shelters and the smells associated with animal housing
While performing this job's duties, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and occasionally stand and walk on all types of surfaces, sometimes slippery and/or uneven and rough
May be required to travel between worksites and report to different shelter locations as needed
