Neighbors, deer and decisions: Building community-based PZP programs
Humane World for Animals
Successful deer management programs depend on thoughtful planning, clear organization, and a realistic understanding of the people, resources, and time needed to carry them out. Drawing on shared, real-world experience, our team has developed practical planning tools and field guidance to help community leaders and wildlife professionals design effective programs using PZP immunocontraceptives as part of a broader approach to reducing conflicts with white-tailed deer in urban and suburban areas.
This presentation will explore how to build community-centered deer management programs by (1) identifying and measuring local deer-related concerns, (2) ensuring that management actions are ethical, appropriate, and supported by the community, and (3) outlining a step-by-step framework for developing and implementing PZP programs, based on our forthcoming deer PZP toolkit for wildlife managers.
