Animal shelters don’t exist in a silo, and we highly encourage shelters to reach out to one another to share best practices and build long-term relationships. In this brief guide, we provide tips to help guide intentional collaborations between mentor and mentee shelters and rescues. We all have something to learn from each other. Peer-to-peer relationship building, both in your area and beyond, is a powerful way to help create a more humane world.

While the Humane World Shelter Mentorship Program no longer includes a capacity building track, past program participant Nashville Humane Association speaks to the importance of these shelter-to-shelter relationships in your region.

"We joined this mentorship program believing we would step into the role of teachers, but we quickly realized how much we would learn in return—about ourselves, our partners, and our communities. Through the guidance of Humane World and the Mentorship Program, we discovered new ways to strengthen connections and create a lasting impact. This experience has been transformative, allowing us to grow not only as individuals but also as a united community working together for a common cause."
- Laura Baker, Executive Director, Nashville Humane Association.

Other past capacity building mentorship participants include Humane Society of North Central Florida, Humane Society of Charlotte, Humane Indiana and Good Shepherd Humane Society.
