What to bring
Rural Area Veterinary Services
You must bring the equipment listed here and any personal items necessary for the duration of the trip. While there are usually places to buy sundries on most trips, such facilities may not be available every day and may not be particularly well stocked.
Required for ALL volunteers:
- Personal gear for indoor camping (sleeping bag and pillow, camping mattress)
- Towel
- Comfortable, closed-toe shoes
- Scrubs and comfortable work pants (one pair/clinic day)
- Rain jacket or poncho
- Mess kit with plate, cup, and utensils
- Refillable water bottle and travel mug for coffee/tea
- Head lamp or flashlight
Required for professional and student volunteers
- Stethoscope
- Calculator
- Pens, permanent marker and yellow highlighter
- Small notepad (pocket-sized)
- Watch that counts seconds
Required for veterinary students
- Sterile surgeon's gloves (10 pair/clinic week) in your size
Strongly recommended for ALL volunteers
- Small bandage scissors
- Sun and heat protection (hat with a brim, long sleeve sun shirt, cooling towel)*
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Sweatshirt or jacket
- Waterproof shoes or second pair (in case of wet weather)
- Shower shoes (bathrooms are generally shared)
- Ear plugs and/or sleeping mask
- Snacks or other ready to eat personal food / beverage items as needed (coffee/tea, electrolyte packets)
- Coffee, personal coffee press (if you are particular about such things)
- Personal items for the duration of the trip
*Note: We may be working under a variety of conditions both indoors and out, and facilities are not always climate controlled. Be aware of expected weather conditions and pack accordingly for your comfort and safety!
